Let’s get your coffee flowing again!
What To Do When My Nespresso Machine Won’t Open?
Before you do anything else do some basic checks, make sure the machine is plugged in and that the power supply is not the issue.
When your Nespresso Vertuo lever won’t open, that’s probably because a capsule is stuck in the machine. Typically, red warning lights will start flashing when this issue arises. However, it’s important not to confuse these with the combined red and yellow light, which indicates the machine requires descaling.
Here is the process I used to get to pod unstuck out of my Nespresso Vertuo machine:
- Attempt to Remove the Pod from the Catching Tray: I tried to remove the stuck pod from the machine’s catching tray. I carefully pulled out the capsule tray, trying to get my hand up into the machine to dislodge the offending pod. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite work out, as the machine’s extractor remained stubbornly in place.
- Slightly Open the Lever: Next, I tried to nudge open the machine’s lever just a tad. My hope was that this would create just enough space for the stuck pod to be retrieved. Yet again, my efforts were in vain.
- Use a Butter Knife: Lastly, I was left with no choice but to resort to using a butter knife to get the pod out. A word of caution here, I made sure to unplug the machine before proceeding. The last thing anyone needs is an electric shock. I gently slipped the knife into the machine, attempting to push the jammed pod away from the front. This approach finally managed to dislodge the stuck pod and I could once again enjoy my cup of coffee in peace.
Based on my experience, the above three strategies should resolve the issue in most cases. Nevertheless, I also did some additional research to uncover methods tailored specifically to certain Vertuo models.
Let’s go over these solutions only applicable to certain models:
Nespresso Vertuo Plus Won’t Open
Firmly Push Down The Lid
Among the solutions I discovered, is to apply a significant amount of pressure downwards onto the lid, and while keeping the pressure, twist the lever to unlock.
I found this method to be highly effective, as confirmed by several other coffee enjoyers. Upon further investigation, I learned that the cause of the problem often stems from the pod, or possibly another object, pushing the lid upwards. This action locks the lid in place, thus preventing the lever from being twisted.
Check Internal Wiring
If the first step fails, check for any loose wiring inside the machine that could be hindering normal operation. Inside the machine, there’s a black wire located on the upper part that can frequently become trapped within the hatch and snap off. When adjusted or reattached, the issue was resolved.

The Metal Wire Is Loose
This solution aims to prevent the issue from recurring. After you’ve managed to un-stuck the lid using the techniques we’ve previously discussed, you’ll need to examine the underside of the lid.
There, you’ll find a metal wire which is responsible for ejecting the cup each time you open the lid. This wire is secured by two screws on either side. If these screws loosen over time, the cup can sit a bit lower than it should, which can cause the lid to get stuck.
To prevent this from happening again, all you need to do is tighten the screws that keep this metal wire in place.
Nespresso U Slider Is Stuck And Won’t Open
First, switch off the machine and disconnect it from the power outlet. Wait for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on, it automatically ejects the capsule inside.
If the above method doesn’t solve the issue, you can try resetting the machine. To do this, press all three buttons on top simultaneously. You’ll hear a beeping sound which indicates that the machine is resetting. After this, the slider should be able to open once again.
If resetting the machine also doesn’t work there might be a broken part inside the machine. Here is a video on how to open it up and inspect it for any broken parts:
Nothing Stuck Anymore, But Red Lights Are Still Flashing?
If the red lights are still on after you’ve tried all the above, there is probably something wrong with the micro switch that indicates to the machine when something is stuck.
You can fix this problem by opening up the machine, here is a video on how to do that:
Contact Nespresso Support
If your machine is still under warranty, it is advisable not to attempt to pry it open or take it apart, as there’s a risk of breaking internal parts.
Instead, reach out to Nespresso’s customer support, as they may provide a replacement machine or offer to repair the machine.
How To Prevent This Problem?
To prevent the issue of a Nespresso machine getting stuck and not opening, you can consider the following steps:
- Correct Capsule Insertion: Always insert capsules correctly.
- Routine Cleaning: Clean your machine regularly to avoid buildup, and prevent your Nespresso Vertuo from not being able to read the pods.
- Periodic Checks: Regularly check and tighten components like the ejection wire.
- Use Compatible Capsules: Stick to Nespresso or compatible capsules.
- Proper Closure: Always close the machine properly after use.
- Careful Handling: Treat your machine gently to avoid mechanical damage.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of your Nespresso machine becoming jammed or stuck. If the machine does get stuck despite these precautions, do remember to follow the recommended steps for unjamming the machine.
