Animals can do amazing things, but a recent viral video has left people feeling uneasy after hearing a beluga whale mimic human speech.
Most people understand that we can’t talk to animals the same way we communicate with each other.
However, some creatures (like parrots) are known to imitate human speech quite well.
But imagine the shock when people discovered a beluga whale mimicking human speech—underwater!
Old Video Resurfaces and Spooks the Internet
The video, originally from 2012, has resurfaced on social media, sparking new waves of fear and fascination.
News reporters commenting on the brief clip described the whale as “cute and friendly,” but online reactions suggest otherwise.
Terrified Reactions from Viewers
Many people have taken to social media to share their thoughts, and they are definitely more horrified than amused.
One person commented on YouTube:
“Pulls up the bloody terrifying beluga whale picture basically saying ‘I will consume your soul.’”
Another added:
“The thumbnail literally made my SOUL jump out of its body for a second.”
A third person laughed at the contrast between the visuals and the commentary:
“I laughed so hard when she said ‘he looks kinda friendly’ right as that terrifying picture came up.”
Why Is This Happening?
Some experts suggest that the beluga is simply imitating the sounds it hears most often.
One person explained:
“It makes sense if you think about how the beluga is only mimicking what he can hear.
The only times human speech would be audible to him is likely when someone is in his enclosure, underwater, and using scuba equipment.
If you’ve ever tried talking underwater, it sounds exactly like that.”

Orcas Are Vocal Copycats Too
If you thought this was a one-time event, think again.
One whale, named Wikie, successfully imitated several human sounds.
Professor Josep Call, a co-author of the study and expert in the evolutionary origins of the mind at the University of St Andrews, explained the significance of this discovery.
He told CBSN:
“It tells us that they are flexible vocal learners. Their flexibility is not only in their vocal domain but also in their motor domain.”
“They can copy body movements, which we already knew, but now we also know they can copy sounds that are not in their natural repertoire.”
The Verdict? Amazing, But Terrifying
While this discovery is fascinating from a scientific perspective, many people online aren’t too thrilled about it.
Whether you find it incredible or terrifying, one thing is for sure, whales making human sounds is something you won’t forget anytime soon!
