Keurig coffee makers are extremely convenient and easy to use, but they do have their quirks. One issue that you might experience with your Keurig is the K-Express descale light won’t turn off.

If this happens to you, it can be a bit frustrating because you probably don’t know how to fix it. However, there are several things that you can try to get your machine working properly again.

What To Do When The Descaling Light Stays On?

With the newer Keurig models like the K-Express and K-Express, you need to put your coffee maker in “Descale mode” and follow the exact descaling process in order for the descale light to come off. One little mistake like touching a wrong button for instance could mess up the descaling process.

Descale Your Keurig K-Express While In Descale Mode

With older Keurig models you could just put some vinegar or descale solution in the coffee maker and run some brews and rinses and the descale light would come off.

With the Keurig K-Express and some other newer models like the K-Supreme and K-Slimyou need to put it in “descale mode” and go through the whole process before the light goes out and you can make a cup of coffee again.

The descaling procedure to follow did come with the original manual when you first bought your Keurig machine.

The descaling process goes as follows:

  1. Add a bottle of Keurig descale solution and water to the tank.
  2. Hold the 6 and 10-oz buttons until the 8-oz and descale lights start blinking.
  3. Press the 8oz button two or three times until the add water light comes on.
  4. Clean the water tank and fill it with fresh water.
  5. Press the 8oz button two or three times until the descale light comes off.

A Small Mistake Can Mess Up The Descale Process

In some cases, the descale light still stays on after this whole procedure. This can happen if you made one little mistake in the process.

Make sure to not open the lid or to remove the water tank while in descaling mode. This will cancel the descale mode and you will have to do it all over again. Also don’t touch any other buttons than described above, as this could also put your coffee maker out of descaling mode.

If that doesn’t work the easiest way to fix it is to do the whole descale procedure again. But this time you can just use water for all the steps since you’ve actually already descaled your coffee maker.

The Last Thing You Could Try

If your coffee maker does not come out of descaling mode even after following this exact descaling process, try unplugging it and waiting about three to four minutes before plugging it back in again.

This can only work if you’ve done the descaling process correctly. If the descale light is still on after trying this you could either try the descale process again or your coffee maker might be broken in that case.

If you think your Keurig K-Express is broken you can contact the Keurig customer service department. They might know another solution or they might even send you a new coffee maker for free.
